Axis Allies

Few Sicilian towns claimed greater antiquity of Gela, where the center of American attack was in the fall. Founded on a limestone hillock by Greek colonists of Rhodes and Crete in 688 bc, Gela has suffered the usual misfortune of Mediterranean countries, including treason, looting, and in 311 BC C., the butchery five thousand citizens by a rival warlord. The ruins of sanctuaries and shrines dotted the modern city of 32,000, and the tombs ranging in vintage from Bronze Age the Hellenistic and Byzantine eras. The fields "Geloan fertile", as called Virgil in the Aeneid, grew oleanders, palms, and Saracen olives. Aeschylus the father of Attic drama, had spent his last years writing Gela on fate, revenge and love gone bad in the Oresteia, legend, the playwright was killed here when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his bald head.
Patton planned a different kind of air attack of the vanguard of the invasion. On the night of July 9-10, more than three thousand paratroopers in four battalions of paratroopers in several vital crossroads outside Gela to prevent attacks against the Axis beaches 1st Division landing. Head of the attacks is the dashing Colonel James Maurice Gavin, who at thirty-six years was about to become the youngest general Army Major in the Civil War. Born in Brooklyn to Irish immigrant parents and orphaned as a child, Gavin Hardscrabble had been raised by parents adopted in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. Leaving school after eighth grade, worked as assistant to a barber, a shoe clerk and administrator filling station before joining the army at seventeen. The wangle an appointment to West Point, where the cadet was mediocre. As a young officer, washed school flight and a greater appreciation as recently as 1941 concluded: "This officer does not seem particularly suited to be a paratrooper. Ascetic and fearless, with a magnetism "to attractive women," Jim Gavin was in fact born to go to their weapons. "He could jump higher, shout over high, spit farther and fight more than any man I've ever seen, "said one subject.
His 505th Regiment of the 82nd Airborne, had set the scene in central Tunisia. Gavin had doubts about the private mission Sicily – "many lives were lost within hours, says – and rightly so. The 82nd had received only about one third of training time than some other U.S. divisions. Allied parachute operations amateur in North Africa have been marked by misfortune and miscalculation. No large-scale night combat jump had been attempted, and so many injuries penalized in Division Tunisia – that fifty-three fractures in his legs and ankle during a jump in the light of day only in early June – that training has been reduced. Much of the planning Husky has been carried out by agents who had no experience in the air and whose ideas are bathed in fantasy. Transport pilots were little experience in sailing at night, but to avoid flying over trigger happy gunners in the Allied fleets, the planes, staying low to escape from the axis of the radar would to do three shifts dogleg offshore in the dark. air units not yet understand how to redirect a greater burden of three hundred pounds, much less a howitzer or a jeep. A pilot project "to" mule "broke three legs, after putting the child of poverty, the paratroopers of the channel used for bayonet practice. However, the ranks "generally agreed that control of the formation had reached the stage where the mission was" in the bag "Wrote an officer of the AAF, who later acknowledged that" the possible overstatement.
About the same time the fleet Hewitt brushed Malta, Gavin and his men boarded the 226 C-47 Dakota, near Kairouan. His face blackened with burnt cork, each soldier carries an American flag on right sleeve and a white cloth tied to the left as a sign of recognition night. A few days earlier, an 82nd Airborne platoon had circulated in the 1st division to familiarize the soldiers on the ground with the baggy pants and shirt worn by paratroopers. Parachutes occupied the C-47 "seats; sixteen pilots each club sitting on the floor the fuselage, the practice of the invasion challenge and password: George Marshall. Dysentery tormented the regiment, and men who struggle with their fishing gear and Mae Wests to squat over honeypots placed along the bays of aircraft. Doctors distributed Benzedrine to the officers, Syrett morphine all.
As the first aircraft began to roll – clouds of dust that just beat so thick that some pilots had to fly by instruments – A forecast published in aircraft Gavin, Commander Steere's prediction is the persistence of strong winds aloft. "Colonel Gavin, is Colonel Gavin here? They told me to tell you that the wind will be thirty-five miles west now, towards the east, "he said." They thought I want to know. "Fifteen was considered the maximum safe speed for jumping. Another messenger staggered huge suitcase with labels barracks prisoners of war. "It was supposed to put one on each prisoner to capture, "said Gavin. An hour later take-off, an officer pushed the stock center at sea.
